Space Weather (history)

Eighty-four years ago, a massive geomagnetic storm disrupted electrical power, interrupted radio broadcasts, and illuminated the night sky in a World War II battle theatre.

Auroras danced across the night sky as far south as Florida and Southern California and voltage surged in power grid lines. [In the USA] a radio blackout interrupted fan enjoyment of a baseball game, while another radio program was interrupted by private phone conversations. Citizens, already on edge, wondered if neon lights were some sort of antiaircraft signal. And far away in the North Atlantic, the illuminated night sky exposed an Allied convoy to German attack.

This was a huge solar storm which occurred during the declining phase of solar cycle 17.

Áróra

In Norse mythology the #aurora were the armour and weapons of the Valkyrie. The word is derived from Old Norse Valkyrja ("Chooser of the Slain") who guide the souls of the battle-slain to Odin's hall Valhalla.

In Finland, a fox was thought to have created the aurora, its bushy tail throwing sparks into the sky.

Scottish legend refers to the lights as “Merry Dancers” engaged in battle.

I was so incredibly lucky to just happen to be in Grand Portage, MN, one of the premiere aurora viewing places, on the night of a particularly active and lively northern lights.

The pictures are great, but being there under the giant electric light show in person and seeing it all with my own two eyes is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.
