On my neighborhood walks I sometimes pass by this residential window that has displayed Betty Boop dolls, dressed in fashions from various eras, for as long as I can remember. This is just one windowpane of a larger bay window with many different Bettys. I’ll try to get a good shot of the whole thing one day.

Tonight: first stop = double dose of weird at Roulette, bill ending with a trio consisting of Wendy Eisenberg, David Grubbs, and Kramer. Nonstop improvisation two-stepping between horror film scaries and inspired melodic beauty, with permutations of myriad overlaps of the two. Opening set from Lea Bertucci, Cleek Schrey, Ben Vida, and Henry Fraser was a cacophony of strings and voice and tape loops, lions, tigers, bears, etc.

Tonight: early stop at Cafe Ornithology in Bushwick. Been digging Charlie Ballantine's new record quite a bit, so was glad for it to work out to catch him play and... Very very impressive young guitar player. Wonderful tone and an adventurous melodic spirit. Little Julian Lage in him. I do believe I will be seeing this guy whenever I get a chance. Me + one other guy here enjoying this amazing early Mon set in a cool out-of-the-way spot.

20 years ago, we stayed in a shabby house in Bedford-Stuyavesant. We had the sweetest landlord, and every morning when the sun came in our window we could hear the sweet Motown soul that someone was playing on the street corner.
Since then, whenever I wake up (at weekends) and the sun is shining into our bedroom, I put on some sweet soul music and have a huge smile on my face.
