⚡ Meta’s toxic, profiling-based content feeds are affecting our lives and well-being – and today, @edri, @Freiheitsrechte, @bitsoffreedom, and Convocation Research + Design (CoRD Labs) filed a #DSA complaint against it.

Meta is violating the #DigitalServicesAct by making it hard for people to choose news feeds that are not based on #profiling.

We deserve to take back control over our own online experiences! ✊🏾

European Digital Rights (EDRi)Civil society files DSA complaint against Meta for toxic feeds - European Digital Rights (EDRi)Civil society organisations are filing a complaint against Meta for violating the Digital Services Act (DSA).

#MassiveProtests Against #Trump are Just The Beginning

A co-founder of #Indivisible lays out a vision for harnessing millions of protesters into an unstoppable pro-democracy movement

by Tim Dickerson, April 8, 2025

Excerpts: "The demonstrations were organized by a broad coalition — including groups that rose to prominence in the first Trump administration, like Indivisible, upstarts like the #50501Movement, as well as established grassroots groups like #MoveOn. The upswell of resistance surprised even seasoned organizers. Indivisible cofounder #EzraLevin texted Rolling Stone on Friday to predict 'one of the largest single-day protests in years' adding that the public response was “kind of shocking."

[...]

"This was a Big Tent — everybody from like #DSA to #MattYglesias and #NeverTrump Republicans were endorsing it. I had briefly gotten excited about calling this the 'Normal March.'

"Like the wacko, MAGA, right-wing crazies are not gonna be part of this. But if you’re a normal person, you would want to take part. Because obviously you oppose #Project2025, you oppose #DOGE and the richest man in the world coming after your #SocialSecurity.

"But I’m happy we went with '#HandsOff.' It served as a good rallying cry, because we all come to this for different reasons. Maybe we’re concerned about the #tariffs, maybe we’re concerned about #TransKids in our community being targeted, or the #immigrants being disappeared, or maybe we’re concerned about Social Security. We’ve all got something to fight back on."

About those echo chambers and filter bubbles...

Systematic review finds no clear cut evidence. It depends on the methods, too much research relies on the US, and specific platforms. And science needs better data to truly assess this, fx via the Digital Services Act

SpringerLinkA systematic review of echo chamber research: comparative analysis of conceptualizations, operationalizations, and varying outcomes - Journal of Computational Social ScienceThis systematic review synthesizes research on echo chambers and filter bubbles to explore the reasons behind dissent regarding their existence, antecedents, and effects. It provides a taxonomy of conceptualizations and operationalizations, analyzing how measurement approaches and contextual factors influence outcomes. The review of 129 studies identifies variations in measurement approaches, as well as regional, political, cultural, and platform-specific biases, as key factors contributing to the lack of consensus. Studies based on homophily and computational social science methods often support the echo chamber hypothesis, while research on content exposure and broader media environments, such as surveys, tends to challenge it. Group behavior, cultural influences, instant messaging platforms, and short video platforms remain underexplored. The strong geographic focus on the United States further highlights the need for studies in multi-party systems and regions beyond the Global North. Future research should prioritize cross-platform studies, continuous algorithmic audits, and investigations into the causal links between polarization, fragmentation, and echo chambers to advance the field. This review also provides recommendations for using the EU’s Digital Services Act to enhance research in this area and conduct studies outside the US in multi-party systems. By addressing these gaps, this review contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of echo chambers, their measurement, and their societal impacts.
