IDF Europe’s latest publication highlights the key barriers to effective #diabetes management and care across Europe [Promoted content]: IDF Europe’s new publication offers a real-world overview of #access to #diabetes care across Europe, highlighting persistent gaps in prevention, management and care. It calls for urgent #policy action to ensure equitable, person-centred care for all people living with diabetes. euractiv.com/section/health-co

Type 1 #diabetes is a demanding sickness. When adjusting insulin doses, you have to take into many factors into consideration: meals, physical exercise, prior doses, general health… Over time, you learn to account for it all better and better. The trouble is, the feedback is not always immediate.

Of course, it isn't always like that. Sometimes you're going to notice elevated or low blood sugar pretty early. But it also happens that you suddenly measure high blood sugar in the late evening, and you have no clue where it came from. And it happens that I eat something "risky" at 4 PM, and then notice suspiciously low blood sugar past 9 PM. So I eat a bit of sweets, and check again in 30 minutes. It's even lower then, so I eat a bit of glucose, plus some chocolate. In the morning, I wake up with 90 mg/dl — which means that if I didn't eat all these extra sweets, I would have a pretty unpleasant wakeup in the middle of the night.

Long Weekends & Life Reminders: You Never Know...[1of2]

Life can change in a heartbeat. We work hard, we hustle, but are we really living?

I learned this the hard way during an Easter long weekend in 2021. What started as a suspected case of appendicitis turned out to be acute #pancreatitis triggered by undiagnosed (asymptomatic) type 2 #diabetes .

I spent a week in the hospital, hooked up to IV drips and a heart monitor. I couldn't eat anything beyond broth and jello, a far cry from the great food they had, like shepherd's pie and all the healthy stuff like brown rice with beef and broccoli!

My Wake-Up Call

This experience shook me to my core:
1. I was active and in good shape. Yet, I faced a serious health crisis.
2. Life is precious and unpredictable. We're not invincible.
3. We work to live, not the other way around.

I am increasingly surrounded by vegan people and considering a change in my diet. Years ago I tried a low carb vegan diet because that’s what my doctor follows (he is also diabetic) I found it unsatisfying 😬 and spiked my blood sugar levels 😣…. But I reckon I could be vegetarian - any long term diabetic vegan or vegetarian people here? Thoughts?#diet #food #diabetes #vegan #Vegetarian
