Happy #blackbirdersweek ! Here are some salt-marsh denizens at the Marine Nature Study Area, seen yesterday, to start the week off right (1st of 3 sets).

And since this year's Black Birders Week theme is sparrows, this series starts with a Salt-marsh Sparrow and ends with a Song Sparrow. To me, the Saltie is emblematic of the plight of salt marsh ecosystems, endangered as encroachment by developers, pollution and sea-level rise due to global heating steadily erode their habitat, yet struggling and persevering in the face of adversity.

Preservation of salt-marsh ecosystems also connects with struggles for climate and environmental justice, as exemplified by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina and other climate disasters. We would all do well to reflect on the intimate links between environmental and social justice and ecological and social sustainability. Please see alt-text for specific info.

Saltmarsh Sparrow perched on a snag (note bands). Bright orange-yellow "eyebrows," black and gray striped crown, brown top dark-streaked flanks and breast, white below. In a typical erect, alert stance. Saltmarsh Sparrow, an endangered species that breeds in the high tide zone (supratidal) in salt marshes along the U.S. east coast, and is thus caught between the real estate developers and rising sea level. These birds have long maintained a breeding colony at MNSA, but with spring tide now regularly inundating the preserve, they have no-where to go.

Least Tern, an endangered species more commonly found around beaches than saltmarshes. This one "sharing the shore" with a Semipalmated Sandpiper. A small tern with a black cap that has a white patch on the forehead, unlike similar terns. Light gray body and black-tipped orange bill.

Breaking ground today in Chelsea on a micro waterfront park on the east side of the Chelsea Street bridge (shown in red on plan). A tricky collaboration between the city, the state, Preflight Airport Parking, GreenRoots and other players, the park is scheduled to open in mid-summer. It will be joined eventually by another Chelsea micropark on the other side of the bridge, the Lewis Latimer Overlook (shown in green).

@AlisonCreekside @SnowshadowII I am actually despondent when discussing this topic. We moved our young family to the Island 36 years ago when Climate Change started to become obvious and we decided to make the most of what lay ahead. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not ashamed that we as a country have not stood up and tried to do our bit to stop the destruction of this beautiful planet. 🌎 #degrowth #environmentaljustice #RenewableEnergy #NoPlanetB
