Deutschlandfunk's program "Corso - Kunst und Pop" interviewed me two weeks ago, in German, on the current trend of AI-generated memes in Studio Ghibli's visual style
In a nutshell, I said that neither AI-generated fake Studio Ghibli images are new (they could be created, for example, with third-party Stable Diffusion LoRAs for about two years), nor the use of algorithms and generative AI in animation (for example, for drawing backgrounds and in-between frames) - but that we're simply seeing the convergence of trolling, meme culture and manipulated political propaganda images [that already existed in early 20th century fascism and Stalinism] where the main function of AI image generators is to simplify, deskill and industrially accelerate meme generation.

Every time I see a #Ghibli AI picture, my heart dies a little. Every time an image is made, we are all impoverished a tiny bit. A small shred of respect is lost for an old man and his crew toiling months at a time on seconds of animation, to tell stories full of beauty, empathy, and humanity, a man who loathed #AI from its earliest days as an affront to life itself.
Every time I see a cartoon facsimile used for a lark, a token bit of our common heritage is stolen, ground up, repackaged, and regurgitated like so much chewing gum, boiling gallons of water and spewing carbon to entertain someone for a moment with images as vapid and forgettable as the next.
Every time I see one of those images, I scroll past and shake my head a little.

You know, I'm never one to utter the sentence, "Art is ________," much less finish it, because art is a billion different things to a billion different ppl, but the following statement from Maria Mouschoutzi, PhD, really does speak to me.

I feel strongly that this is an insult to life itself.” Miyazaki said of the goal of creating a machine that “draws like humans do”: “I feel like we’re approaching the end of times. We humans are losing faith in ourselves.” Watch all by Ghibli, watch all by Miyazaki, stay away from the ugly copycats. Respect art that stays true to itself.

Das Beste, was aus der KI-Sache rund um Ghibli werden kann, ist, dass sich Menschen irgendwann doch die Frage stellen, was eigentlich echte Originalität in einem künstlerischen Schaffensprozess bedeutet. Und vielleicht schaut man doch lieber nochmal die alten Filme oder versucht sich selbst am Zeichenbrett anstatt das von der KI zusammenfabrizierte und zudem urheberrechtlich problematische Stückwerk weiterzuverbreiten.
