According to the volunteer crew, the Madleen was approximately 80 kilometres off the coast of Greece in the Mediterranean, en route to Egypt, when a drone appeared overhead before either turning back or switching off its lights.
In a post on X, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said all those on board were safe, adding that search and rescue authorities had identified the drone as a Hellenic Coast Guard Heron surveillance drone.
Upon arriving in Egypt, the group plans to walk to the Rafah crossing on foot, aiming to draw attention to Israel’s siege on Gaza. Israel has previously attacked such vessels, most notably in 2010 when Israeli forces killed Turkish citizens aboard the Mavi Marmara."
