When Universities Become Informants

A practice from the #McCarthy era makes an ugly return.

"On September 4, I received an email from the #UniversityOfCalifornia at #Berkeley’s chief legal counsel, David Robinson, informing me that my name has been handed over to the #Trump administration in a file containing allegations of antisemitism. A few days later, I discovered that the university had sent a list of 160 names to the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. The list includes the names of students, staff, and faculty who may well suffer serious consequences, including the loss of jobs, expulsion, #deportation, or harassment. This was a shock for many of us who believed that Berkeley is a university where one can expect support for freedom of expression and guarantees of fair procedure.

"Antisemitism must be unequivocally opposed along with every other form of racism, but there are campus protocols for investigating such allegations that ensure fairness and which, in this instance, were suspended by the administration. Moreover, it is important to consider which definition of antisemitism is at work. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which the Trump administration accepts, is overbroad, often equating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. It acts as a cudgel against freedom of expression and dissent."

Anti-Jewish campus and faculty problems are real and serious. Also, I can't stand Judith (J. Butts) Butler. But this is how you descend into fascism and "nightmare capitalism," to borrow a phrase.

Nothing good can come of us allowing this administration to use us as cover.

#UCBerkeley, a top-ranked public institution, sent a letter to affected members of #campus last week disclosing that #university lawyers had included their names in reports to the Department of #Education’s office for #civilrights (OCR). The education department has been targeting #colleges across the country as part of Donald Trump’s aggressive crackdown on pro-#Palestinian #activism, international students and #academic freedom."

I had seen the movie with Viggo Mortensen, read the comic, but still hadnt'n read the original. I've just finished it.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is quite a bleak story.The original prose was IMHO the best way to experience it, but as non-native English also a bit hard to grasp sometimes. It's only ~110 pages, but so dense & bleak I had to take breaks. It's a re-reader & recommended, but not for the faint of heart.

Today in Labor and Writing History July 10, 1925: The Scopes "Monkey Trial" Trial began in Dayton, Tennessee. John T. Scopes was a high school science teacher accused of violating the Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality. Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee wrote about it in their play “Inherit the Wind” (1955). However, they said that their play was a response to the McCarthy anticommunist witch hunt and a statement in support of free speech. Ronald Kidd's 2006 novel, “Monkey Town: The Summer of the Scopes Trial,” was also based on the Scopes Trial. Scopes was defended by labor Clarence Darrow, who had defended Eugene Debs, during the Pullman strike (1893); and Big Bill Haywood against false murder charges (1905); and the McNamara brothers for the false charges in the L.A. Times bombing (1910).

Ja, das 'Committee on Government Operations' unter dem Vorsitz des Republikaners #McCarthy wird uns wie ein Puppenspiel vorkommen. Emigration wird aber für Verfolgte kein Ausweg sein, da praktisch alle infrage kommenden Staaten sich wohlverhalten müssen, weil Trump ihnen gemeinsam mit Putin und den Scheichs noch viel besser den Ölhahn abdrehen kann als 1973 die OPEC.

Aber Erdöl sicher Wohlstand und der Verbrenner bedeutet Freiheit!

Today in Labor History May 3, 1919: Pete Seeger was born, Patterson, New York. He started his folk singing career in the 1940s, with the Almanac singers. This group included Woodie Guthrie, Cisco Houston and Bess Lomax Hawes. They sang about industrial unionism and racial inclusiveness. In the 1950s, they reconstituted as the Weavers. However, they were blacklisted by the McCarthyites. As a result, radio stations stopped playing their records and their bookings were cancelled. Seeger was a member of the Communist Party USA, but left it in 1949. NEW YORK (AP) — "The Trump administration brushed aside decades of precedent when it ordered Columbia University to oust the leadership of an academic department, a demand seen as a direct attack on academic freedom and a warning of what’s to come for other colleges facing federal scrutiny.

"Federal officials told the university it must immediately place its #MiddleEasternStudies, #SouthAsianStudies, and #AfricanStudies Department under 'academic receivership for a minimum of five years.' The demand was among several described as conditions for receiving federal funding, including $400 million already pulled over allegations of #antisemitism.

"Across #academia, it was seen as a stunning intrusion.

"'It’s an escalation of a kind that is unheard of,' said Joan Scott, a historian and member of the academic freedom committee of the American Association of University Professors [#AAUP]. 'Even during the #McCarthy period in the United States, this was not done.'"

Die #Wiederholung der #McCarthy-#Ära durch die #Trump-#Administration ist natürlich kein #Zufall, war doch #RayCohn, Trump's #Anwalt, #Förderer und #Mentor ein tatkräftiger #Unterstützer McCarthy's in den 50er Jahren gewesen. #Geschichte wiederholt sich zwar nicht, aber in diesem Falle wird sie #kopiert. Es geht also #rückwärts mit Amerika.
