After Delos we got to walk around the main town of Mykonos which naturally involved lots of bright white buildings and winding alleys. Very pleasant in the Mediterranean heat and plenty of photo-worthy sights. This is the rear of Panagia Paraportiani, a Byzantine church.

A cloudless day with strong sunshine somewhere ahead and high giving the sky a pale but piercing blue colour with the brightness. We're looking at the rear of a church on a Greek island, made in the same style as most structures here with thick walls of rough white to protect from the heat of the exposure in this part of the Mediterranean. The church is small and has rough, stepped, rising, featureless, layered walls around its edges making it almost look natural, like a small hill. At the top is a circular structure with a single, deeply-recessed window set into its side facing out and to our left. A low, smooth, white dome sits on top of this building. Left of this structure there are two thick columns with a small arch over them and a bell supported in the middle. The left column thickens out and becomes one with the hillside look of the walls. The top of a small tree with spiky, olive green leaves adds a splash of colour at the bottom of the view.

The final port on our week-long 2016 Mediterranean cruise on Royal Princess was to Mykonos and upon arriving we headed off almost immediately by boat to nearby Delos to take a look at this exposed, quiet island littered with ruins and artefacts from numerous extensive archaeological excavations. Truly one of those places that puts you in awe especially in some of the more open areas and away from any other visitors to the island.

We're standing in ancient Greek ruins at one corner of a square space around which there are walls ranging from chest height to twice an adult's height, made from rough stone bricks of a few hues of warm grey and dusky brown. A piercing blue sky forms the backdrop. This space in front of us measures no more than a dozen metres to a side and contains a mostly intact mosaic floor, mostly white or cream, aged by the sun, but while dusty black contrasts to form patterns of curling waves in two border blocks around a central design that's not full enough or easy enough from this angle to make out. There are three stone columns opposite us; one on the corner of the mosaic, one either side on adjacent edges. Each composes of three tall sections, lightly fluted, and each has a simple capital suggesting early age. A few tourists are off to the right side of the roped-off mosaic area reading an information board. It feels quiet and hot here.

Something warm and bright from the travel archive on this cold and dreary Saturday afternoon.

This is Panagia Paraportiani, a Byzantine church (technically five churches), in Mykonos town.

A cloudless, deep blue sky forms the backdrop to a stone church with thick walls plastered in bright white. The design is typical of this area of the Mediterranean, with a domed section towards the rear and stepped, angled roof at the front. A thick riser on the front wall to the right forms a flattened bell-tower shape over a door set into the thick wall below. Only a couple of small windows can be seen with the majority of the exterior simply white, reflecting the sunshine and with sharp but pale shadows on the left walls.

On 17 September 1992, the then Secretary General of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran and his three companions were murdered on behalf of the Iranian secret service in the former Mykonos restaurant in Berlin.

On 10 April 1997, after three and a half years, the Berlin Court of Appeal convicted the perpetrators and named the Islamic regime of Iran as the instigator of the murder.

On the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the Mykonos assassination in Berlin in 1992, the German Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran commemorates the victims.

Am 17. September 1992 wurden der damalige Generalsekretär der Demokratischen Partei Kurdistan Iran und seine drei Begleiter im Auftrag des iranischen Geheimdienstes im ehemaligen Restaurant Mykonos in Berlin ermordet.

Am 10. April 1997 verurteilte das Berliner Kammergericht nach dreieinhalb Jahren die Täter und benannte das islamische Regime des Iran als Auftraggeber des Mordes.

Anlässlich des 32. Jahrestages des Mykonos-Attentats von 1992 in Berlin gedenkt das Deutsche Komitee der Demokratischen Partei Kurdistan Iran der Opfer.

For #MeerMittwoch here's a boat sculpture on the promenade at Kalafatis beach on Mykonos in 2016 photographed in the 1.25 second gap during a 20-minute stretch when the same bunch of tourists weren't standing in front of it, taking pictures, posing, checking photos, and generally pointedly making sure they gave no consideration to anyone else looking to take a shot.

A clean-feeling scene. We're on a white stone promenade beside a sea that's almost perfectly flat with just the merest hint of ripples on its surface creating shaded areas that deepen its colour beyond that of the bright, cloudless sky above. At the edge of the promenade are two lampposts. Framed between them and slightly closer to us on the stone is a small boat raised on a small frame. It looks like it could almost be carved from stone itself. It's a simple boat with space for perhaps six people to sit and with a single mast - no sail - about a third of the way from the right. It's clearly a sculpture or monument to something, and its whiteness on the stone promenade against the blue backdrop gives it a peaceful feel.
