[Thread] So, it took having to do a search on the website, but I managed to find the #BlackHistoryMonth audio archives on the #WMPG website. Hopefully, the ones from 2025 will also be posted on their website (and the ones already posted won't disappear...).

Black History month - daily short history audio features

Posted February 3, 2021 by 'mpger

"Everyday in the month of February (Black history month), WMPG is airing a short audio feature about an influential Black man or woman in history. We’ll hear about people from Maine to Malawi. We celebrate scientists, radicals, teachers, preachers, musicians, athletes, and those who fought to followed their dreams. You can hear them all again right here: #BillieHoliday , #LeonardCummings , #MaconBollingAllen , #HarrietTubman , #NelsonMandela , #ShirleyChisholm , #MarshaPJohnson , #GordonParks , #JackieRobinson, #AngelaDavis , #ThurgoodMarshall , #StevieWonder , #Lizzo , #CornellWest , #TrevorNoah , #MaeJemison , #TaranaBurke , #AlvinAiley , #JosephineBaker, #RhiannonGiddens, #SunRa, and #LaverneCox."

On this day in 1972 Shirley Chisholm was nominated the Democratic presidential candidate. She was both the first Black person and woman to be nominated. She ran on the slogan “unbought and unbossed.”

With obvious challenges she called out her gender as the biggest, noting “…I met more discrimination as a woman than for being Black.”

17/23 Yep, #TrickyDicky had won one of the largest landslide wins ever!

Of course, Nixon was going to Nixon, and his historic success was short-lived and largely forgotten. Sure, the #WatergateScandal sank his administration, but I think Nixon's popularity doesn't come up a lot because it might draw attention to his #SouthernStrategy, #ShirleyChisholm, and the Democratic Party SWITCHING to "the party of Black people".

At any rate, the denouement, the coup de grace, came from #RonaldReagan.

16/23 But the biggest tipping point (and the one most conveniently forgotten) was 1972. Ready for this?

#ShirleyChisholm, a Black woman, ran for the Democratic presidential ticket — the horror!

Phillips said: "White Democrats will desert their party in droves the minute it becomes a black party."

Yep, he said that.

Chisholm didn't win, but she didn't have to - white Democrats drove 2x loser Republican Nixon one of the largest presidential election #landslide wins in #AmericanHistory.

@MinAdrianne

#WhiteSupremacy loved the church, until their slaves claimed eligibility for salvation in Christ.

They loved cities and factory jobs, until Black folks moved in and showed up for work.

Education was cool, until schools were desegregated.

They eschewed gun control, until #BlackPanthers strapped up.

They were Democrats until #ShirleyChisholm ran for the presidential ticket in 1972 powering Nixon's landslide victory, the biggest in US history.
