That flight I was hoping would stay cheap managed to stay. We didn't get the lowest fare I had seen (<$500) but snagged a $690 one way Westjet ticket, Nanaimo to Barcelona; cancellable/changeable and includes seats, checked bag, and carry-on. Incredible value.

It's also the lowest CO2 hit by air from Western Canada.

Hardware: (Canadian made) Dash 8 Turboprop from Nanaimo to Calgary (93kg pp) and B787 to Barcelona (425kg pp).

There are no direct flights to Spain west of Calgary. I'm frankly shocked AC or WS don't have a B777 or B787 in the summer and winter from Vancouver to Barcelona… it would fill! Perhaps its capacity on the Barcelona side that is full up.

I love the Dash 8. A little noisy compared to a standard jet, but I really like the feel of smaller aircraft. And they generally fly lower, so the views over the rockies especially are fantastic.

Bottom trawling in European waters costs society up to €11bn a year, new study finds.

A first-of-its-kind study released today found that this cost is largely due to carbon dioxide emissions from disturbed sediments on the seafloor.

The study is the first to measure the full economic cost of bottom trawling in European waters - including the EU, UK, Norway and Iceland.

How does a wasteful heat pump powered by fossil-fuel electricity help in decarbonizing buildings while extreme carbonizing rural areas where powerplants are?

It doesn't, it is just another fad by electric industries and oil/coal companies to advance their sales of electric crap with none or negative impact to the atmosphere.

Pretend you are an environmentalist while you reproduce oil/coal/elec industrial marketing.

Global assessment found only 17% of peatlands were protected. This contrasted starkly with other valuable ecosystems such as tropical forests, 38% protected, and mangroves (42%). Protection was even lower than 17% in three nations with the most peatlands: #Canada, #Russia and #Indonesia. #US and #Brazil completed top five nations, which contained almost three-quarters of all peatlands.

EurekAlert!Most of the carbon sequestered on land is stored in soil and waterAn international study, with the participation of INRAE and the CEA, has discovered that the majority of terrestrial carbon sequestered over the last 30 years is stored in nonliving forms such as the bottom of lakes and rivers, wetlands and soils. Until now, forests were considered to be the main carbon sinks on terrestrial surfaces. However, an analysis of carbon fluxes over the last few decades reveals that, if we take into account gains and losses on a global scale, only around 6% of the total sequestered carbon is stored in live biomass. This loss could be the result of forest degradation in many parts of the world—caused by fires, droughts and deforestation. Very little is known about the key sequestration processes in these nonliving pools, and currently, many are not included in global models of changes in carbon stocks. Published on 20 March 2025 in Science, these results could help to better predict the future trajectory of these reservoirs and how they are affected by human activities and climate change.
