In a quiet residential area of Brussels, tucked away among the modern and uniform facades of the Forest neighbourhood, sits a house that is giving birth to a unique project which could revolutionise our approach to the start and end of life. Here, expecting mothers and end-of-life patients live side by side, cared for respectively by midwives and volunteers. Africa: Cameroon Prepares to Launch National Strategy On Maternal Health: [Africa CDC] For many women in Cameroon, childbirth remains a significant health risk. Is the rise of C-section births to do with pressures related to the NHS crisis? Or are their other drivers to the swift expansion of C-sections to over two-fifths of al UK births?

Whatever the cause, it doesn't look good for either mothers or their (new) children.

In German #folklore , it was a common belief that a woman should not leave the house for six weeks after #childbirth .

While this is cloaked in superstition ("...or else the Devil will get you!") the end effect was still that new mothers were allowed to _rest_ for six weeks and recover from their ordeals.

Compare this to (say) the #USA where women are only entitled to some unpaid leave in such a circumstance - and most only take a few days off because they can't afford to do otherwise.

Mind you, I am not saying that living and working conditions in previous centuries were great - as a rule, they weren't.

But there was a keen awareness among the working classes that people needed _rest_ from time to time - something that is often forgotten in this day and age.

Bonsitu Kitaba, deputy #legal dir for the #ACLU of #Michigan, argued MI's ban on #Medicaid coverage for #abortion creates a "two-tiered system" between those who can afford #private #HealthInsurance for terminating a pregnancy & those who cannot. The deprivation, Kitaba said, infringes on the fundamental right to #ReproductiveFreedom & is #discriminatory since Medicaid covers #childbirth but not abortion.
