Außerirdisches Leben auf naher Wasserwelt?

Astronomen bestätigen potenzielle Biosignatur auf dem habitablen Exoplaneten K2-18b

Astronomen haben auf einem nahen #Exoplaneten das bisher stärkste Indiz für außerirdisches Leben gefunden. Die Gashülle der nur 124 Lichtjahre entfernten Wasserwelt K2-18b enthält das Molekül #Dimethylsulfid (#DMS) und/oder #Dimethyldisulfid (#DMDS), wie Messdaten des James-Webb-Teleskops bestätigen. Beide Moleküle gelten als #Biosignatur, weil sie auf der Erde nur von Organismen produziert werden – ein abiotischer Syntheseweg ist nicht bekannt.

Madhusudhan/ University of Cambridge Die neuen Spektraldaten zeigen deutliche Peaks im Bereich zwischen 6,8 und 8 Mikrometern und zwischen neun und elf Mikrometern, wie die Astronomen berichten. Der Abgleich mit den erwarteten Spektralsignaturen für 20 verschiedene Moleküle ergab, dass diese Signaturen von Dimethylsulfid und/oder Dimethyldisulfid stammen müssen. „Unsere Daten belegen die eindeutige Präsenz für nur zwei Moleküle: DMS und DMDS“.

@jupiter_rowland OFC this is also due to the fact that the last 50+ years no serious attempt at teaching #TechLiteracy has been done anywhere in a formal matter.

Luckily #Education and #Knowledge isn't monopolized and Initiatives like @cryptoparty / #CryptoParty exist that basically get #TechIlliterates to a level that if they follow up what has been trained don't act as "#UnofficialEmployees" of #NSAbook et. al.

Either way, we'll all have to take part in making the world better, even if that meremy means not contribute to #Enshittification...

OFC that is a constant struggle.

  • Needless to say all #Fediverse Software like #Mastodon actually tells people: 'Hey, #DMs are not private nor encrypted beyond #SSL - #Admins can read them if they actually want to!'
