This show of 14 episodes started its life as a podcast, and then thankfully was translated into a visual format as the host of both versions travels around the world to find the places where things originally were, then where they are now, and asks the question “was this stolen?” Nearly every time, it’s a clear ‘yes.’
A couple of times the subject is predictable — the ‘Elgin Marbles,’ the Stone of Destiny from Scotland — but other things are surprising and cut right through your heart: a doll for a young Tasmanian girl, or the ceremonial regalia of a Blackfoot tribal chief. About half the time, the object is repatriated, but equally often it isn’t.
The discussion of the nature of initial procurement and the worth of potential return is dealt with even handedly, allowing stakeholders to speak their minds without name-calling or moral judgements of the other person, limiting discussion to validity of argument presented.
Very recommended!
