"One of #California’s largest collections of digitized #newspapers, going back nearly 200 years and spanning approximately 54 million articles, could disappear due to gutted state #funding. The unexpected news has delivered a heavy blow to historians, journalists, researchers and educators who rely on the archives for their work…The California Digital Newspapers Collection, housed at UC Riverside’s Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research, said on its website that its future “is in jeopardy” after…its budget was completely decimated, leaving [it] with just a few weeks to source $300,000 or face the possibility of getting shut down."

…Eliminating the #NEA itself would take a majority in #Congress.

"Any attempt to dismantle the National Endowment for the Arts—by eliminating #funding, reducing staff, or canceling #grants—is deeply concerning, shortsighted, & detrimental to our nation…The NEA plays a vital role in the lives of millions…& the thousands of #nonprofit & governmental arts & cultural organizations that bring America's story to life,”said Erin Harkey, CEO of the natl #arts advocacy org Americans for the Arts.

Among those affected are the #Berkeley Repertory Theater, Central Park Summer Stage in #NYC, & the #Chicago-area #arts #education #nonprofit Open Studio Project.

"The #NEA is updating its grantmaking policy priorities to focus #funding on projects that reflect the nation's rich artistic heritage & creativity as prioritized by the President,"the email, several copies of which have been shared w/NPR, stated in part. "Consequently, we are terminating awards that fall outside these new priorities."

"The budget document released by the White House on Friday for the upcoming fiscal year…would cut all non-defence spending by 23% but targets the US National Science Foundation [#NSF] for a 56% funding reduction, and would slash the budget of the US National Institutes of Health [#NIH] by roughly 40%. The Environmental Protection Agency [#EPA], which on Friday also announced plans to dismantle its primary research division, would be hit by a 55% cut as the administration seeks to eliminate what it calls “radical” and “woke” #climate programmes."

"The National Institutes of Health announced Thursday it will no longer allow subawards to foreign institutions, as part of a national security-minded overhaul to how the agency manages its $47 billion research funding portfolio. The change is likely to cause immediate disruptions to research projects around the world."

The #CPB immediately fired back Friday, with a statement asserting that the president does not have the #power to cut off its #funding — #Congress does.

“Congress directly authorized & funded CPB to be a private nonprofit corporation wholly independent of the federal government,” the CPB said in a statement.

Since #Congress ultimately decides & approves #spending levels, it is significant that Senator #SusanCollins, #Republican of Maine & the chair of the #Appropriations Cmte says she has “serious objections” to #Trump’s proposed #defense spending levels & cuts to programs like the #LowIncome Home #Energy Assistance Program & those that support #biomedical #research.

“Ultimately, it is Congress that holds the #power of the purse,” Collins said.

In cutting $1.065B from the #SubstanceAbuse & #MentalHealth Services Admin, #Trump falsely claimed he was eliminating Biden-era #funding for harm reduction supplies such as “safe smoking kits & supplies” & “syringes.”

#SAMHSA was established in 1992, not under #Biden.

What it ends is regional & national quality behavioral-health services such as addiction-prevention, treatment, & recovery-support.

It will now be integrated into the new “Administration for a Healthy America”

Not surprisingly, the #budget includes significant cuts to programs & financial assistance aimed at helping #immigrants & #refugees learn English, find homes & work & settle into American life.

Some #ImmigrantRights groups & NGOs have been preparing for these reductions to their budgets since #Trump was elected. Nevertheless, the loss in #funding, combined w/his admin’s #immigration crackdown, are having a chilling effect in migrant communities across the country.

#Trump not only has #Republican majorities in both houses—albeit slim majorities—but he also has a stranglehold on the #GOP. He has remade the party, he throws his weight around in primaries, & lawmakers know it.

But perhaps an even bigger factor to consider is the *cost-cutting* project known as… #DOGE, which has been attempting to cut govt spending without #Congress weighing in.
