Which geospatial conferences are you excited about in 2026?
I'm compiling a list at https://github.com/Nowosad/conferences_2026 -- please contribute events you know about!
What am I missing?
For years we've been paying $12-13,000 for annual Esri software maintenance. This year it's over $17,000. Next year if we keep our current numbers it will be close to $21K, ramping up to almost $29,000 in 2029. I guess Jack must be struggling to pay his bills? We certainly will be. #gischat
Mimal the Elf, also known as Chef.
The Elf is a figure created by the outlines of several Midwestern US states. Minnesota forms the Elf's hat, Iowa creates the head/face, Missouri forms the body, Arkansas makes up the legs, and Louisiana creates the boots. Tennessee and Kentucky are included to represent a frying pan and a piece of fried chicken, respectively, completing the Chef image.
@luckytran it is a good colour scheme for colour blind people, probably works well if printed in black and white and is good on a variety of computer screens. These things are very important to cartographers and are the subject of large books, many papers and conference sessions.
See https://colorbrewer2.org/#type=sequential&scheme=GnBu&n=5 for a link to demonstration and links to papers etc.
New article from Musang Yoo & Hyeongmo Koo looking at spatial autocorrelation and it's impact on spatial cross-validation, https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2422593 #GISchat
New article from Zhiwei Wei & Nai Yang, who use a negative spatial auto-correlation index to improve tag map layout across multiple different scales, check out the paper at https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2391479 and their project at https://github.com/TrentonWei/Multi-scale-TagMap #GISchat
A novel way of comparing artificial land use in European cities, whilst adjusting for size. Check out a graphic below, the article at https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2433573 and the interactive tool at https://land-use.shinyapps.io/UE_Land_use_2018/. Fascinating new article! Silvia Klettner explores the The significance of the cartographic sign, evaluating influence of symbol shape on intuitive judgements, #GISchat, https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2334454
Fantastic new article from @VaientiBeatrice and colleagues, using Deformation Analysis to identify copying processes in historical maps, https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2424891 #GISchat #OpenAccess
New article! Tianshu Chu, Haowen Yan and colleagues explore a new way of generalizing road networks by making use of the PageRank algorithm to select the most 'important' roads, https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2439311 #GISchat, An example of the class-based method and the new PageRank method for 4 cities in China.
New #article from Linfeng Jiang and colleagues, looking at a new way of visualising road connectivity: using CiteSpace, a bibliometric tool, with the literature replaced by the traffic trajectory and the keywords replaced by the roads, #gischat, https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2310884
New article: A systematic literature review from Mariana Vallejo-Velázquez & Ourania Kounadi on spatial perception and knowledge via structured digital sketch maps, https://doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2024.2434629, #OpenAccess #GISchat
Issue 52-05 of Cartography and Geographic Information Science is now available and the printed copy should be with all our subscribers! This time we have 8 papers including a systematic review of digital sketch maps, some great new spatial methods, a couple of really interesting applications and some new applications of spatial statistics. Check it out at https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/tcag20/52/5, and the thread below! #GISchat
Germany has a lot of roads called "Sackgasse" (dead-end road).
However, some of them have no dead ends at all. What a scam!
I've challenged myself to find them and used the resulting #Overpass query as an example in my workshop today at @FrOSCon.
https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/29ZE
(the query may need a minute to execute)
I have added a lot of comments to explain how it works, and I have added it to the example queries in the #OSM wiki.
