For years we've been paying $12-13,000 for annual Esri software maintenance. This year it's over $17,000. Next year if we keep our current numbers it will be close to $21K, ramping up to almost $29,000 in 2029. I guess Jack must be struggling to pay his bills? We certainly will be. #gischat

Mimal the Elf, also known as Chef.

The Elf is a figure created by the outlines of several Midwestern US states. Minnesota forms the Elf's hat, Iowa creates the head/face, Missouri forms the body, Arkansas makes up the legs, and Louisiana creates the boots. Tennessee and Kentucky are included to represent a frying pan and a piece of fried chicken, respectively, completing the Chef image.

@fionag11 now I am interested in how... does GIS hell look like?

(as a non GIS person, in my mind, it looks like the horrible ArcGIS course I once took during my PhD, which consisted entirely of clicking through a 60 page printed out tutorial of screenshots of the GUI)

arXiv.orgMapLibre Tile: A Next Generation Vector Tile FormatThe Mapbox Vector Tile (MVT) format is widely considered the leading open standard for large-scale map visualization, as evidenced by its widespread adoption by major technology companies such as AWS, Meta, and Microsoft for their products and services. However, MVT was developed nearly a decade ago and, consequently, does not fully align with the capabilities of new geospatial data sources that are characterized by rapidly increasing data volumes due to advancements in geospatial sensors and automated detection through artificial intelligence. In this paper, we introduce the MapLibre Tile (MLT) format, a novel vector tile specification designed from the ground up to address the limitations of MVT. Our experiments, simulating user sessions on widely used basemap datasets, demonstrate that MLT achieves up to three times better compression ratios compared to MVT on encoded tilesets, with over six times better on certain large tiles. Additionally, MLT offers decoding speeds that are up to three times faster and significantly enhances processing performance. MLT also introduces new functionalities and is specifically designed to lay the foundation for the next generation of map renderers, which we expect to entirely offload processing to the GPU, thereby overcoming the stagnation of Moore`s law.

@luckytran it is a good colour scheme for colour blind people, probably works well if printed in black and white and is good on a variety of computer screens. These things are very important to cartographers and are the subject of large books, many papers and conference sessions.
