I composed this shot vertically, but ended up using the upper 4x3.25" of the 4x5 negative. Effectively, I wanted a horizontal composition with a 180mm lens (which I have, but didn't have with me). Maybe I'll start carrying it. Luckily with 4x5, you have lots of room to crop in post.

Starting on 14 April is the next Folder Week, a Challenge that's new to me but is a great idea to get out some of the many folding cameras that I seem to be accumulating. The plan is to use the KW Patent Etui from the 1920s with the 118 roll film back, but worst case, the 1940s Agfa Karat could be a worthy substitute.

A wooden park bench sit on a concrete pad surrounded by the dry grass of late winter. There are some small patches of snow that has melted to ice. In front of the bench is a makeshift fireplace of gathered stones and it looks out at the unbroken horizon of Lake Ontario.

The horizon over a large lake and it is, indeed in the middle. The lake has no large waves or swells but is not smooth and darker areas show where zephyrs of breeze are travelling. Some pale clouds line the horizon but become sparse near us.

Camera: Gowland Pocket View 4x5. Lens: Rodenstock Apo-Sironar-N 150mm f/5.6. Film: Tri-X 320. Exposure: 1/8 sec at f/36. Camera more-or-less squared (hard to get 100% square on a camera with no detents and just friction tightening).

I didn't record it, but I believe I focused linearly half-way between infinity and the barbed wire -- get one, get the other, then move the wheel (linear with lens-to-film distance) half-way in between. If so, I did it by feel while watching the ground glass, not by measuring and marking.

5x7 Burke & James large format wooden view camera

I'm unsure at this point where I took this. I'd originally thought it came from my road trip between Portland and San Francisco in 2017, but I didn't have my 5x7 at that point. So 2018 is a guess, and the location a mystery.

Printed on warm tone paper from a paper negative that was a bit overexposed (hard to do, as it takes a long time to get a good exposure on darkroom paper).

a vertically-oriented black and white photo. Seemingly deep in a forest, very tall redwood trees occupy the entire frame. They're so tall that both their bottoms and tops are hidden. Overexposed, the sky has no detail. Sunlight reflects off the tree leaves.
