e_kloczko
Tolkien's manuscript.

This is from another area of Tolkien's mind: calendars.
He was pretty obsessed with making calendars for his Middle-earth. He wrote a big appendix to "The Lord of the Rings" about it, and wrote a great deal about the calendars before settling on the text as printed in Appendix D of "The Lord of the Rings".

I also feel like making a Font of Tolkien's own pen writing. What do you think?

#tolkien #calendars #calligraphy

e_kloczko
Tolkien's tengwar script is used with many different (pretty logical) 'rules' called 'modes' or 'usages'.
In one such mode the vowels are written as diacritics over the Elvish letter.
(see image below).

I settled on _each mode = 1 OpenType Font_; rules are different in each modes.

In one mode Elvish diphthongs are written with special compendium. In order to override the liga rules I put the diphthongs in rlig but XQ 2022 does not recognize this!? 😞
While WORD and InDesign are oki.
#tolkien

So he asked to send another one.
Image 2 shows the well know inscription as printed in books. The original art sent by Tolkien to the printer is lost.

The inadvertently changed tengwa is circled in blue. 1 tripod in 3 trenchcoats
"I asked Polygon’s resident sports gamer, Samit Sarkar, to tell me some things about the Masters Tournament, and it seems to have a number of parallels to The Lord of the Rings, what with an all-male group of heroes battling to win a precious, worn object that has known many bearers over its long history. e_kloczko
I was very surprised to meet young Feench typographers who know Tolkien and his Tengwar, but do not understand why the Tengwar need to have their own modern design (stabilization) and not simply make copies of the few Tolkien's calligraphies they know.
Tolkien experimented extensively with Elvish calligraphy. My goal is to provide the public with several Tengwar fonts and pave the way for other typographers and designers.
Image = Tolkien's manuscript.

#tolkien #tengwar #elvishtypography

e_kloczko
The Tengwar are primarily a system of signs. The manner in which they were used and applied varied greatly at different times (within Middle-earth) and according to the purposes for which they were used. For each language to which this script was applied, the values of the signs and diacritical marks were freely altered and adapted, making the correct use of this writing system extremely complex. Tolkien often made mistakes while writing in Tengwar.
#tengwar #tolkien #elvishtypography
