Solarpunk Presents Podcast<p>7.10: Ariel &amp; Christina Discuss the Solarpunk Merits of Walkaway by Cory Doctorow</p><p>Cory Doctorow’s 2017 novel Walkaway has a reputation in solarpunk circles as a great example of a solarpunk lifestyle, and a must-read book for everyone from the individual who lives and breathes solarpunk to the solarpunk-curious to general science fiction fans. But what is it about Walkaway that gives it solarpunk cred? Ariel and Christina ponder this, discussing features of the novel that could be considered solarpunk, and some that might be more post-cyberpunk than anything, and how some of the ideologies and technologies are or have been applied in our present world. Is the world of Walkaway an achievable solarpunk paradise, or a nice hopeful story featuring very cool gadgets and bites of lefty philosophy? Or something else entirely? What is the draw, here, anyway? Join us to think through some of the quandaries and ideas the book raises.</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/K0Qx3MnrceA" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/K0Qx3MnrceA</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/episode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>episode</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/solarpunk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarpunk</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/SolarpunkPresentsPodcast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarpunkPresentsPodcast</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/podcast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>podcast</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/podcasting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>podcasting</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Walkaway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Walkaway</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/CoryDoctorow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CoryDoctorow</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/SolarpunkFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarpunkFiction</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/scienceFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>scienceFiction</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/hopepunk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hopepunk</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/CatholicWorkers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CatholicWorkers</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/socialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>socialism</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/communalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>communalism</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/cohabitation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cohabitation</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/cohousing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cohousing</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/philosophy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>philosophy</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/TangPing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TangPing</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/quietQuitting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>quietQuitting</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/leftistPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>leftistPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/leftistPhilosophy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>leftistPhilosophy</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/hotTakesFromYourSolarpunkAunts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hotTakesFromYourSolarpunkAunts</span></a></p>
Shotgun Seamstress<p>Thinking about how when I was young, I thought I’d live communally forever. I lived in group houses for many, many years without issue. Then around the 2010s I moved to a city where addiction, violence and untreated mental illness were much more prevalent inside and outside of the punk scene. I had housemates invite a friend with a heroine addiction to stay with us. They didn’t tell me about his addition but suddenly our belongings began to disappear. </p><p>Another time after someone in our community was murdered, I walked into my home to find a loaded gun on the kitchen table. The owner was a housemate who loved alcohol &amp; recreational drugs and knew nothing about gun safety. The murder frightened him so he decided to arm himself. In later years, he got stabbed buying drugs and eventually died of his own recklessness. </p><p>It’s just funny to look back at how idealistic you can be when you’re young and haven’t yet seen how complicated and gritty life can get. <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/OldPunkThoughts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OldPunkThoughts</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GenX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GenX</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Communalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Communalism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CommunalLiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommunalLiving</span></a></p>
Shotgun Seamstress<p>My mind is blown. My mom is Igbo yet I never heard the supposedly common phrase “Igbo enwe eze” (from pg 35 of African Anarchism) which translates to “Igbos recognize no kings,” and speaks to a tradition of communal solidarity and non-hierarchical leadership. Now I’m finding a number of academic papers by Nigerians on the topic of Igbo communalism. <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Nigeria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nigeria</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Africa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Africa</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>communalism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/solidarity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solidarity</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NoKings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NoKings</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History September 1, 1880: The utopian communistic Oneida Community ended after 32 years. The Community was founded by John Humphrey Noyes and his followers in 1848 near Oneida, New York. They believed that Jesus had already returned in AD 70, allowing them to bring about Jesus's millennial kingdom themselves. The Community practiced communalism (holding all property and possessions in common). They also practiced complex marriage, where 3 or more people could enter into the same marriage, and male sexual continence, where the male’s goal was to not ejaculate during sex. They were also one of the first groups in the U.S. to practice mutual criticism, to root out bad characteristics in people, something adopted by many later cults, and even by Cesar Chavez and the UFW under his leadership.</p><p>The Oneida Community has been portrayed in numerous works of fiction such as “Silken Strands,” by Rebecca May Hope (2019). “Assassination Vacation,” by Sarah Vowell (2005) and “Pagan House,” by David Flusfeder (2007).</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WorkingClass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WorkingClass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/socialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>socialism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/oneida" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>oneida</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CesarChavez" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CesarChavez</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cult" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cult</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Communalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Communalism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/novel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>novel</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
ophiocephalic 🐍<p>Those of us interested in the prospect of fediverse communalization within the FediPact context should convene a broader conversation, inclusive of admins, developers and engaged community members - particularly those from marginalized or targeted backgrounds. ophiocephalic 🐍<p>So too, gender-based harassment has not only endured in the fediverse, it has been perpetuated by some of its most privileged participants, as observed in a recent controversy involving a stream of abuse perpetuated by a very visible megaserver admin. Who moderates the moderators?</p><p>Building a Free Fediverse comprises an opportunity to chart a course away from the predominating influence of amoral techbros who have no capacity for understanding these problems, and see the fedi primarily as an opportunity for financial investment.
