Barry Schwartz 🫖
My god, they are building the Ada compilers in NixOS as cross-compiled from binaries, supposedly of the same version, but actually only of the same MAJOR version!

AND YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BUILD THEM CROSS-COMPILED AT ALL! You are supposed to build the Ada compiler self-hosted, by going through the bootstrap phases!

So you can use ANY recent version of GNAT to build it. You can use the previous version that YOU built.

This is incredible. They have no idea what they are doing.

#NixOS

Barry Schwartz 🫖
I do not see why, if your goal is reproducibility, you cannot simply build NixOS with an entire GCC suite! Just build it with a complete GCC suite!

Install the whole thing!

Someone complains it is too big? Tell them TOUGH NOOGIES! It is for the sake of reproducibility.

And it would be FAR, FAR SIMPLER than anything they have dreamed up.

Then GCC would work as designed.

If a platform cannot support a particular compiler, then drop it for THAT platform alone.

SIMPLE!

#NixOS

Barry Schwartz 🫖
Okay, I see there is an experiment ‘ng’ gcc in NixOS, that is a ‘split’ whatnot.

Although I have seemingly succeeded in building a little suite from the existing stuff. So a hacker can use what’s already there, even if it be inadequate for the system.

I am still very unhappy that bootstrapping is turned off.

#NixOS

Barry Schwartz 🫖
As for the dude who couldn’t tell whether my posting of some Nix code was satire or not, what the heck was his point? That the code was itself opaque?

It was a function definition. You were meant to use the function. The point of my posting was that you simply paste in that function code. Then you can put scripts that are written in ANY language (they need not be in Bash! I use zsh) in a directory called ‘scripts’ and install them by writing ‘(simple-script script-name)’ for each script.
#NixOS

Granted, I’ve only tried using it for my personal workstations. Servers are a different story, though I did not see the need to switch there either since my setup is working fine for me. The nix shell though is pretty useful for software development. It’s nice to be able to provide a complete environment to other developers.

fleischie 💯
I still don't know how I feel towards #NixOS

Giving it the benefit of the doubt and my very brief experiences with it of course: I think having a consolidated configuration for different tools is both a blessing (single source of truth) and a curse (forever stuck on .nix files, however you want to feel about it).

I have to rely heavily on multiple, seemingly inofficial web-sources to explain what I need to configure how to get e.g. a service running. Which is also not great.

🤔
