If you paid close attention to the indie and alternative music scene lately, you probably realized how many excellent music outlets are releasing outstanding tracks, vividly showcasing their talent and skill. However, many of those music outlets also tend to overly explore their influences, experiment too much, or simply try to reinvent the same old wheel by writing music that mimics something the greats recorded and performed decades ago. Thankfully, The Shrubs are doing quite the opposite. They continuously deliver fresh, unique, innovative, exciting music that goes beyond genre conventions, showcasing their tremendous songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing abilities to the max. With “<a href="https://song.link/rs/i/1833940295" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Fall Behind</a>,” their second piece of work released a couple of weeks ago, they vividly demonstrate how indie music can still sound innovative if it’s properly written and composed. Now, perhaps The Shrubs dominantly explore indie sound by implementing all those fundamental elements of this longstanding genre, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from power pop or dream pop. They fully stacked “Fall Behind” with all those qualities, making this song one of the finest indie tunes you’ll hear this year. These additional sonic ingredients are here for a reason. They are implemented as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that uplift this standalone single to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. The Shrubs incorporated all those qualities that meet trends in modern music production yet there’s a subtle touch of nostalgia lurking around and spicing things up. Therefore, these experimentations with various styles, techniques, and approaches resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging listening experience worth revisiting over and over again.Photo courtesy of the band.From the onset, it becomes apparent that these folks poured heart and soul into this track. “Fall Behind” is a piece of art, rarely heard or seen on the contemporary music scene. The song arrives with a perfect structure, riddled with many profoundly detailed segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous orchestrations. Each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver has its place and purpose in this sonic equation, making “Fall Behind” such a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over and over again. As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how the guitars play a significant role in shaping such a beautiful, mesmerizing, otherworldly ambiance that immensely supports vocal harmonies. The interplay between various guitar layers also adds a touch of complexity while the entire composition remains easy listening to the max. You’ll notice how all those jangly, angular themes and leads shine on one side while the other side resonates with multiple layers of acoustic and electric guitars. It’s nearly mindblowing how all these layers articulate without overwhelming each other, making this even more pleasant to the ears. There are generous servings of delay and reverb effects, added for that dreamy, echoic vibe. In the meantime, the marvelous vocal performance acts as a centerpiece, commanding attention and leading listeners on an epic voyage through the expansive sonic universe. The soulful, passionate, sincere, confident, emotive, and powerful vocal harmonies seamlessly balance low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything the remainder of the band intended to achieve with this track. Beneath all those lush orchestrations, the vividly hearable, intricate, warm-sounding low-end notes rumble and contribute more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while simultaniously serving as a binding element between guitars and rhythmic patterns. These basslines are rich, deep, dense, and heavy, acting as a counterweight to the jangly guitars and providing more than necessary groove and detail. This epic sonic journey wouldn’t be complete without the exceptional, cleverly assembled, flawlessly performed drumming performance, based upon many energetic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. Each hit of the snare, kick of the snare drums, accentuation on a hi-hat, and splash over the cymbal cuts the ambiance and provides more complexity to an already intricate structure.With “Fall Behind,” The Shrubs prove that indie still has so much to offer.
