The Modern Lovers, The Modern Lovers, 1976 on Beserkley

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers are part of the indie rock canon, especially here in greater Boston. They formed in Natick MA in 1970, and were active from 1970 to 1974, but most of their records came out later – this one in 1976.

Jerry Harrison (of Talking Heads) gets credit for piano, organ, and backing vocals, with Ernie Brooks playing bass, and David Robinson drums. John Cale produced six of the songs. That’s a gig poster for Gloucester High School auditorium on the rear cover.

Some legendary songs here – “Roadrunner” (which you may know via the Sex Pistol’s cover and after which a local venue is now named) and “Pablo Picasso” which has been covered by many people including David Bowie and Jack White.

My copy—via A1 records in NYC—is a later reissue (2009) by 4 Men With Beards on 180g vinyl.

Broadcast, Tender Buttons, 2005 on Warp Records

This was the third studio album from Broadcast, at this point largely a proect of Trish Keenan and James Cargill as a duo, credited on the album as James & Trish. Tender Buttons was also a book of poetry by Gertrude Stein that came out in 1914 – I took a flyer on the album just based on that (and did not know Broadcast before) but it is really wonderful.

The vinyl releases have a slightly different track order than the CDs or streaming.

My copy is the 2025 Vinyl Me Please “20th Anniversary” edition on magenta & cyan vinyl, in the Essentials Track. It’s a great package and sounds wonderful.

One of the most meticulously crafted noise-reissues I've seen is the Slave Labour – Vol. I and II 4xCD box by Dada Drumming. In addition to the excellent noise – a collaboration between Lingula (David Gilden & Richard Ramirez) and Macronympha – there is a lot of explicit content, both in text and imagery, in this box.

"There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" is a song recorded by Canadian singer #ShawnMendes. Written by Mendes, #TeddyGeiger, Geoff Warburton and #ScottHarris, and produced by Geiger and #AndrewMaury, it was released as a single on April 20, 2017. The song was included in the #reissue of his second studio album #Illuminate (2016). An accompanying music video was released on June 20, 2017. The single reached number one in The Czech #Republic, Guatemala, and Serbia.
