This Is My Glasgow<p>Decorative wrought iron grille over the fanlight of 77 St Vincent Street in Glasgow. The building was designed by J. J.Stevenson, and was constructed in the 1870s. The words at the bottom of the grille are Respice Finem, a Latin phrase which means Consider the End. This can be thought of as a memento mori, and a reminder to consider the consequences on your actions, rather than acting rashly in the moment.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ironwork</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecturephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecturephotography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/decorativeironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>decorativeironwork</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>Whatever the reason, and regardless of what happened to them, these wartime efforts dramatically changes the streetscape of Glasgow, and many other parts of the UK, forever.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/decorativeironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>decorativeironwork</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/railings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>railings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/wwii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wwii</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The idea of recycling of architectural ironwork for the war effort actually began Germany in 1938, and was started in the UK in 1940. In 1941, Glasgow was amongst the first British cities to launch a large scale programme of removing decorative ironwork, and any not deemed to be of historic importance (i.e. made after 1850) and not needed for safety reasons were considered fair game. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/decorativeironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>decorativeironwork</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/railings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>railings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/wwii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wwii</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>If you keep an eye out while travelling around Glasgow, you'll see many low walls lined with metal stumps like this one outside a church in Pollokshields. Most of these are all that remains of decorative railings removed during World War II. As many such railings were made of wrought, rather than cast, iron, they were relatively easy to recycle into new iron objects. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/decorativeironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>decorativeironwork</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/railings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>railings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/wwii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wwii</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>Over the past few years, I've suggested quite a few times that this rather beautiful old lamp base outside the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow should be painted up to make it stand out a lot more. Well, it looks someone is finally doing it! This Is My Glasgow<p>A close up of one of the four water-spouting walruses in the Sun Foundry's 1868 Grand Central Fountain in Paisley. Why? This Is My Glasgow<p>The magnificently over-the-top and somewhat bizarre Grand Central Fountain in Fountain Gardens in Paisley. Created in 1868 by Glasgow's Sun Foundry for the industrialist Thomas Coats, it is possibly my favourite fountain in the world. This Is My Glasgow<p>I love it when I come across an old bootscaper still in place. This one, outside a Victorian townhouse in the Park area of Glasgow, is particularly nice, if a little bit worse for wear, and is nearly identical to the ones outside 10 Downing Street in London, the traditional home of the British Prime Minister. And before anyone asks, yes I really am geeky enough to have spotted this!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/bootscraper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bootscraper</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/castiron" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>castiron</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ironwork</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/decorativeironwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>decorativeironwork</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/10downingstreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>10downingstreet</span></a></p>
