Almost all the servers on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse are run by unpaid grassroots volunteers that pay their server's bills out of their own pockets.
They don't sell your data or carry advertising, and they don't get any share of the donations given to the Mastodon etc software developers.
Please consider donating to your server admin, they usually have donation links on your server website's "About" page. You can also ask your admin directly about how to donate.
@brendagaltin welcome to the FediVerse! There's a lot of tricks to learn, I have learned a lot from @FediTips #fediTips
Welcome to the Fediverse!
Take a look at #fediTips and #mastoTips if you need a guide to using Mastodon, etc.
If you want to log in on a Pixelfed server, you need a Pixelfed account on that server. You *cannot* sign in on a Pixelfed server with a Mastodon account.
There is a button labelled "Sign in with Mastodon" on Pixelfed but it does not do what it claims to do. Every time you use this button, it creates a new totally separate Pixelfed account using info from your Mastodon profile.
If you're comfortable using Github, you can vote to fix this at https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/issues/4606
Today is the day I turned my post quote default settings to 'only me', which is where I'd have preferred the default to start.
I had to use the desktop interface to do that, as the Tusky app doesn't show it yet.
Does it apply to old public posts as well?
In general, I'd prefer instances to take a cautious approach to new features that make people more vulnerable to being taken out of context.
Mastodon servers running the experimental ("nightly") version of Mastodon may have quote-tooting now active.
If it is active, it should work by clicking a post's boost button, which offers the option to quote if the account has opted into quoting.
Don't worry if it's not yet active for you, this is just on experimental Mastodon as the feature is still being tested.
Quoting will be released in the next server software version (v4.5.0).
(Thanks @NatureMC for info! )
Do you want to follow interesting accounts on Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse? I've done a list of all the methods to discover good accounts at:
You can also discover thousands of handpicked accounts organised into categories on my other site at:
Additionally, you can follow my other account for themed suggestions of good accounts:
(A lot of people have asked about this in recent days, hence this post )
@MikeHindle hi Mike and welcome! If you check out #FediTips there is a ton of useful info there. Generally my advice would be to search hashtags that you’re interested in and follow people there whose posts you like (you can always unfollow/ mute later if needed). Hope you enjoy being here!
You do NOT need Mastodon's official app to join or use Mastodon.
To join Mastodon without the official app:
1. Choose a server from https://fedi.garden or https://joinmastodon.org/servers
2. Go to the server's website and click on "Create Account"
3. You can then log in on your server's website, or use the same account to log in on any Mastodon app including the official one and third party apps

To anyone like me who is not tech minded but on the fediverse, I urge you to discover the power of filters.
It has taken me two years or more to realise that 'no algorithm' means that you need to curate your feed. They are easy to use, but, my word, afterwards you have a much better time.
I find that there is so much repetition of the same message, whether it is pictures of cats, complainants about a right wing figure being racist, or the ongoing danger of covid. A simple filter on the common hashtags and, voilà, a much richer experience. I'm sure that there are other uses, but that works for me.
I'd also like to see more use of hashtags to aid discovery. I'd love it if the culture was to tag the name of anyone discussed. That way I could follow the names of obscure writers, thinkers and artists and find my people. That is as important as alttext for me.
Indirectly, Jen Sorensen may bring tens of millions of new people to the Fediverse, Mastodon, et al.

If you use Mastodon through your server's website, you might have noticed an eye icon in the top right corner of post threads. Have you ever wondered what this does?
This icon is really useful if you are viewing a thread with lots of posts hidden by Content Warnings (CWs). Clicking the eye toggles all the CWs for the entire thread open or closed, which saves a lot of time if there are many CWed posts in that thread.
More info in this guide:
https://fedi.tips/what-does-the-eye-icon-%f0%9f%91%81%ef%b8%8f-mean-on-mastodon
Tip for people who are unsure about certain instances: Look at the moderation list of well-established and popular instances and see if you can find them there.
Important: Sometimes the names in these lists have some “*” in them to not advertise the content.
You find the list on the “About” page, under “Moderated servers”. The instances are grouped by type of moderation and then sorted alphabetically. Sometimes the reasons are intentionally vague.
If you only use Mastodon through the official app, you are missing out on lots of features such as scheduled posts, pinned posts, list creation, account redirects and much more.
Third party apps and Mastodon's website interface have a lot more features than the official app, and tend to get new features earlier too.
You can find out about all the different ways of using Mastodon in this guide:
https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app
The official app is not the only way!
Ihr braucht keinen eigenen Account, um das Wichtigste im #fediverse mitzubekommen.
@mathyeti Hi, and welcome to Mathstodon ... one of the "instances" or "servers" or "communities" in the world of:
Mastodon-the-Platform.
It can be a little confusing to start with, but in general you post things, read things, comment on other people's posts.
Then you follow people you like the look of, and you're well on your way.
If you have any questions ... post.
There are accounts to follow that will help:

Hashtags to search for and follow:
And you can always just ask.
Welcome!

@howto
@tutorial
On Mastodon you can search just your own posts by including the phrase "from:me" in your search.
There are lots of these special phrases (called "operators") which let you customise your Mastodon search, so that you get a very specific set of search results.
You can see a complete list of Mastodon search operators in this guide:
https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon
You can combine several operators in one search, or use a minus sign - before an operator to exclude it from the search.
With domain fronting the blocking of many fediverse sites can be circumvented.
This is based on the fact that many websites share the same IP number. Therefore a government blocking access to a website can in many cases only block the domain, but not the IP of the site, otnerwise many other websites would be blocked too.
By either configuring a proxy in the mastodon app or on the device or by using dns-over-tls or dns-over-https and a dns-resolver like @quad9dns or Wikipedia's dns-resolver (on android configurable in device preferences) this can be circumvented.
