here is a closeup of the blooms of a California lilac. This is probably a cultivar called 'Dark Star', which is very popular. It has very dark leaves. The plant can be trimmed into a formal hedge, but left on its own it develops this sweeping, broad irregular shape that's well suited to windy headlands and sunny grasslands.

I saw lilacs on my walk today (photo 1). They're a European species, native to the Balkans, widely planted in North America for their fragrant blooms. They sometimes struggle here in the Pacific Northwest with our dry summers. A (nearly) native alternative is California lilac (Ceanothus spp-photo 2). They also have fragrant purple flowers that attract bees like crazy, but are evergreen and drought tolerant.

We're at that time in the year where my garden paths turn into a little jungle because the Spanish bluebells and the dandelions are going crazy and I haven't mowed anything yet. Eventually all this will get mown back but for now it's a kind of happy chaos and I love it.

Opened up the #lowtunnel to water it yesterday. Everything is growing well, albeit slow. Little to no pests. We've been eating a lot of bok choy.
Working my way through #covid19 Yep I was fully #vaxxed got it anyway. And it wasn't the least bit mild. 3 days of fever over #102. Today 5th just feels like a chest cold. But as any good #gardener would when expecting a week of rain. And having sprouting bulbs arrive monday. I went out and planted over 200 #bulbs on my hands and knees. Mixed #crocus , #iris reticulata Harmony, grape #hyacinth, PurpIe Emperor #allium , and #snowflakes. Still to plant are blue shades #anemone blanda and a few species tulips.
And also two colors of bachelor button seeds.

Early morning garden harvest - some of my Hungarian lettuce & some grapes.
A critter (skunk or raccoon) got into my Jarrahdale #pumpkins & tasted most of them. Pretty frustrated as they were going to be gifts, but no one will want them now! Some will seal & still be good for baking/eating, others may mold. Had to #harvest early. #GrowYourOwn #Food #GardeningMastodon

Ongoing soil remediation project is making slow & steady progress. Cardboard, topsoil, compost, woody debris, crushed seashells, seaweed, grass cuttings, leaf mulch are all breaking down together nicely.
