Gramsci quoted in the news - observer.co.uk/news/columnists

I am always sceptical of using the 'morbid symptoms' quote. I think we're quite quick to find the morbid symptoms, and that produces confidence in the imminent birth of a new world. To me that assumption can appear complacent.

There's a crisis, for sure. But whether now is the moment of change or not is less certain than I think the quote on its own is often taken to imply; as Gramsci knew, we have to work for progressive change.

:blobcatangel:

As cardinals begin choosing a new Pope, here are the two main lessons Gramsci (1971: 340) takes from Catholicism for any historically-significant cultural movement:

1) the Church constantly repeats its arguments to keep people knowing and believing its ideas
2) the Church has a leading group of intellectuals who give its different parts some unifying direction and legitimise its status

So for the pursuit of social justice we learn: keep preaching; effective movements need coherence.

'I am presently under political arrest and will be a political prisoner. ... I've always refused to compromise my ideas and am ready to die for them, not just to be put in prison.' (Letter, 10.05.28)

On 27 April 1937, 88 years ago today, Antonio Gramsci died because of imprisonment under fascism.

His ideas on how oppressive power systems function and how to organise against them are as pertinent as ever. This essay by Stuart Hall is a great way into Gramsci - versobooks.com/en-gb/blogs/new
