This is an American mink, a harmful invasive species in Finland. It preys on the eggs of many water birds, which haven’t naturally evolved defenses against such a predator in the Finnish archipelago. To control its population, mink hunting is actively encouraged.
I took this photo in the Turku archipelago a couple of years ago. The mink was playing on the ice, rolling in the snow, climbing on the rocks, and diving into a hole it had made in the ice. Despite being an invasive species, it’s undeniably an adorable animal.

Smaller industries were also shut down in Canada's #BritishColumbia, #Ireland, #Hungary and #France, while bans will come into effect in #Romania, #Latvia and #Lithuania in 2027 and 2028. The three latter countries are minor producers of #mink. A ban on #MinkFarming has come into effect in #Bulgaria.

An EU-wide ban could be decided on next year, which has the potential to change the industry profoundly once more.

Both of this has shrunk global production majorly. While it still surpassed 81 million #mink and #fox pelts in 2012 (and stood at almost 66 million in 2019),this had decreased to fewer than 15 million in 2023. Even outside of Europe, fur farmers have complained about falling demand amid broader awareness of animal mistreatment and farming practices. The world's largest producer, China, has seen production volumes fall on this background, another factor majorly influencing global production.

If it weren't for the fact that american mink are a non-native invasive species destroying the local wildlife, I'd find them rather elegant and fuzzy...

First time of seeing one in the wild myself. Impressed at just how close we got (about 15' across a water channel).

Og 205 medabejdere til godt 1500 sager er 7,5 sager pr medarbejder.

Lad os så sige at der ikke er blevet behandlet en eneste sag de sidste 4-5 år så vi starter i dag og hver medarbejder får det samme i årsløn som statsministeren, så har de stadig lige omkring 100 dage til at behandle hver sag. Mon ikke vi kan blive enige om at det så også er nok?

Hedendaagse interpretatie van de klassieker van #daVinci door #TwylaFrancois.

Deze artieste zegt met haar penseel een soort van ‘sorry’ voor het leed dat we dieren (hier marterachtigen voor hun vacht) op grote schaal aandoen. ‘Maak het niet te bont’, lijkt ze te willen zeggen.

We zien in het schilderwerk een fabriek voor het kweken van hermelijnen en de bevrijding van de dieren door de ‘lady' uit het klassieke schilderij van da Vinci.
