江上被花惱不徹 …
只恐花盡老相催。
繁枝容易紛紛落,嫩葉商量細細開。
Who understands the grief these riverside blossoms inflict?
I just fear that when the flowers are gone, old age will press upon me.
The densely packed branches will easily shed petals in thick flurries, may the tender leaves consider just opening bit by bit.
from “Strolling Alone By the Riverside, Looking for Flowers” by Du Fu
(a combination of translations by David Hinton and Stephen Owen)
lots more amphibian activity tonight. one of my favorites found, behold the four-toed salamander (Hemidactylium scutatum) in all their tiny glory. Most salamanders have 4 toes on front and 5 toes on hind feet, but this one is unique with 4 toes on all. sorry hard to photograph that characteristic but please enjoy other cuteness characteristics.

Figured this rainy day and night would get them to start coming out and about, had to go on a night walk to see who’s around. Saw around 6 Wood Frogs (one of which is in photo below; none calling yet), 2 Spring Peepers (lots more calling), and 6 Spotted Salamanders. It’s just the beginning though!
Habe mal getestet, meine ältere GoPro 8 ins Wasser zu halten.
Starring: Bergmolche
Noch verbesserungswürdig, aber schon toll. Halbe Geschwindigkeit btw.
went on a night walk to check some vernal pools, first warm rainy night …no activity yet, but found first spotted salamander of the season on the move. And one red-backed salamander was out and about as well.

For #SciFri, I've authored a PSA on why it is not wise to move frogspawn between ponds, including information and guidance from a number of sources. Hopefully, a number of people find it useful! #Herpetology #Amphibians #Frogs #FrogFriday
