🔬 Researchers from @LeibnizHKI and @unijena have discovered a hidden #toxin in some 🍄 #mushrooms that only develops its effect after preparation. It is a form of the already known #muscarin - the 4'-phosphomuscarine.

Weekend #Plankton #Factoid 🦠🦐
Summer is when reports of Harmful Algal Blooms (#HABs) happen in freshwaters, almost always caused by #cyanobacteria. Commonly referred to as blue-green #algae because of a distinct phycocyanin pigment, they are in fact a type of photosynthetic #bacteria. Not all cyano species cause HABs, but some can produce several toxins, most commonly microcystin-LR, a hepatic (liver) #toxin dangerous to drinking #water, but is also *very toxic to dogs.

"A recently published study found high #toxin concentrations in #GuianaDolphins in neighboring #SepetibaBay, which has significantly impacted the health of the population... So far, a protected environment in #Sepetiba Bay has helped stem #dolphin mortality, and efforts are being made in #Guanabara to clean up the bay"

The #freshwater #cyanobacterium #Aetokthonos hydrillicola produces highly #toxic dolastatin derivatives pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2219

"Even in low concentrations, this #toxin can destroy cells and is similar to substances currently used in cancer treatment. Two years ago, the same team established that the first toxin from the cyanobacterium is the cause of a mysterious disease among #BaldEagles in the USA."

Do you know that there are non-venomous spiders? This project started from a 1931 hand-drawn observation that Uloboridae spiders do not carry a functional venom system.
With histological, RNAseq and bioinformatics work led by the great Giulia Zancolli and master student Xiaojing Peng, we confirm that Uloboridae 🕷️ have lost venom glands , but find that they produce putative neurotoxins in the digestive gland. #EvoDevo #spider #Uloboridae #GeneExpression #venom #toxin
