Although different regions have different customs, the straw rope for shimekazari is typically made by cutting rice plants before their ears have appeared, then drying them in shade.
Many areas of Japan have their own traditional way to decorate shimekazari.
In Ise they add a wooden tablet with the word 'Shōmon' (笑門), 'Laughing Gate'. It comes from a longer phrase '笑門福来', meaning good fortune and happiness will come to the home of those who smile.

I wanted to host a wonderful multicultural potluck gathering early Fall but can't host anything like that or host any big cultural holiday events like Chinese New Year until a full year has passed since Dad's passing.
