OK, not done with Fountains of Wayne.
A lot of bands write great melodies, and there are many skilled musicians who can play beautifully. But when you combine that with observational specificity and carefully crafted lyrics that push well past the “girl/guy makes me sad” line:
She ran away back in ‘78
Just down the beach to the neighbors’
They brought her back after sunset
Her dad said "Don't do me any favors”
So much there, in so few words.
Today I'm going through some old Fountains of Wayne songs. I was a fan since I got Utopia Parkway in 1999 when I was 19, which was a few years before Stacy's Mom (which is of course a great song I still dig).
This is a live version of one of the songs I've never been able to forget from Utopia Parkway. This one ALWAYS pops in my head. Check the lyrics- "Now I look a little more like that guy from Korn" 
Unfortunately, we lost Adam Schlesinger (a founding member of FoW) in 2020 from COVID -- he's playing bass and singing in this video. RIP.
