Four year old Madeleine La Cour belongs, for a year at least, to Company "E" of the 101st U.S. Engineer. She thinks they are the best god-fathers in the world for they sent her money for a present, not for a pair of shoes or for a dress or for anything useful, but for a real present, so her mother bought for her with their soldiers' money, a pair of earrings. She had lost those that her soldier father gave her before he was killed in the war and she was very sad. Now Madeleine smiles and says in French baby-talk that she loves her god-fathers. Taking up the suggestion yesterday to post more plant/flower images for the herd to admire (in addition to my usual birds)... further encouraged in this by my botanist wife.

This is a Hygroscopic Earthstar encountered on sand-dunes we explored last summer in the Isles-de-la-Madeleine. Unearthly.

OK - it's a "flower-like" fungus and taxonomically fungi are no longer plants but I just like it.

When I was a kid there was this cake shop near us (in Tokyo) that made madeleines with marmalade.

Their madeleines did not come in the shell shape; they came in a shallow cup-cake like tin foil, with a thick layer of light orange marmalade at the bottom.

Imagine the delight of a child eating that buttery cake and then using her finger(!!) to scrape the gooey marmalade base?! I don't even know how adults ate that marmalade-madeleine with politeness and dignity. #madeleine #marmalade
