CCIT Seminar with @neil_selwyn on Digital Degrowth

"In 2020, Wired magazine declared degrowth to be "the worst idea on the planet". Three years later, Marc Andreessen called out degrowth as a "bad idea" and an "enemy" to technological progress. Taking inspiration from Andrew Ahern’s observation that "degrowth pisses off all the right people", Neil Selwyn considers what degrowth and post-growth thinking might have to offer those looking to radically break away from the destructive modes of digital excess that have come to define the first few decades of the twenty-first century. In short, this talk considers a deceptively simple question - how might degrowth thinking support ambitions of sustainable, scaled-down and equitable ways of living with digital technologies?"

Hej!

This is our #introduction / #introductions

We are the Institute for Degrowth Studies, based in #Malmö #Sweden. We are an association (“ideell förening”) founded with the aim of spreading knowledge about #degrowth, creating and/or supporting activities aligned with degrowth, providing opportunities for our members to learn more about degrowth, and fostering collaboration both locally and internationally with other degrowth groups and organizations that share similar values.

After organizing the 6th International Degrowth Conference we have arranged study circles and study visits, lectures, workshops, film screenings, and projects. We have also collaborated with other civil-society organisations for public events and activities.

As part of prefiguring the world we want to see, we are now happy to also have a presence on the #fediverse. We will post updates of related events in the area and share other relevant materials!

Hej!

An important documentary from the BBC titled “Less is more: Can degrowth save the world?”
_______________________________

In recent years, a new approach to addressing the climate crisis has been gaining traction. A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet. They instead advocate for a bold solution: degrowth.

The movement argues for radically scaling back our global consumption of resources, the democratisation of the economy, and collectively managing key resources.

Critics of degrowth argue that economic growth has lifted many people out of poverty over the years, and that the movement underestimates both the power of innovation and the need for investment in new sustainable technology.

But what is degrowth and what does it look like in practice?

Capitalism is the root cause of the climate and environmental crises and cannot possibly be part of any solution. Either we end capitalism or capitalism will end us.

We're on a path to fail. There is no technology that can prevent the collapse of modern industrial society.

The good news: It is barely conceivable that with nearly immediate system change and a strong commitment to the principles of a just degrowth, we *might* be able to achieve a comparatively soft landing.

The bad news: Our capitalist rulers will surely not surrender to anything like the above without a hellish fight.
