One of the interesting things that happened once #animals #evolved was that they started to make holes in the #sediment. This not only opened a new niche once they figured out how to dig but also changed how some elements (e.g., sulfur) exchanged with the water above. (nature.com/articles/ngeo2537).
Already in the late Ediacaran, some things began to go into the sediment (doi.org/10.1130/G32807.1), which opened up the sediment from diffusive to advective mode of flux (doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2022.103).

NatureProtracted development of bioturbation through the early Palaeozoic Era - Nature GeoscienceMobile organisms first appeared in the fossil record prior to the Precambrian–Cambrian transition. Sediment textures indicate that the degree of sediment mixing by animal activity remained low for 120 million years following the transition.

“And yeah, some #white dudes are. #Trump & all his #MAGA buddies are out there making it worse, shouting #nonsense in their #stupid red hats & acting like they speak for us when they don’t. All they’ve ever done is screw us over.”

“But if you’re not on the MAGA train, where do you go? Isn’t it just swapping out one crappy option for another?

As #humans #evolved to hunt, gather and share food, cooperation provided a key to our success as a species. While #chimpanzees and other #primates sometimes share food, humans stand out. As hunter-gatherers — the subsistence strategy that all humans followed until the invention of #agriculture

“Human #follicular #mites: #ectoparasites becoming #symbionts” (Smith et al. 2022)

Do you think about the mites that live in your #face #follicles and come out at #night while you #sleep? Maybe you should!

🧬 They’ve #evolved a tiny #genome.

💪🏻 Each leg segment is powered by only one #muscle cell.

😴 They follow your sleep cycles by responding to your #melatonin.

🧫 Lowest number of cells of any #arthropod.

If you find this intriguingly #weird, this paper is for you! 🤯

Tasty, fun to catch, and excellent models of speciation! Salmonids have it all! 🐟🍣🎣🧬😎

Specifically, co-ocurring (aka #sympatric) #salmonid #morphs that have #evolved recently, repeatedly, and independently can be thought of as natural replicates of #speciation!

Intrigued? Check out this talk I recently gave on "Evolutionary Insights from Sympatric Salmonid Morphs" at the #FishBase Salmonid Symposium at the Swedish Museum of Natural History!
