'New test diagnoses bacterial meningitis faster and better'

"Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening condition in which one in six patients die and half of the survivors have residual symptoms."

"Researchers at Amsterdam UMC have discovered that the CRP protein in cerebrospinal fluid is a very reliable indicator of bacterial meningitis. CRP is already frequently tested in blood to detect bacterial infections"

EurekAlert!New test diagnoses bacterial meningitis faster and betterResearchers at Amsterdam UMC have developed a new diagnostic test that can quickly and accurately diagnose bacterial meningitis. The test measures the CRP protein in cerebrospinal fluid, a protein that is already often tested in blood to detect bacterial infections. Research shows that elevated CRP in cerebrospinal fluid is a very reliable indicator of bacterial meningitis. Currently it often takes a long time before meningitis is diagnosed, which delays the start of adequate treatment. The study is published today in The Lancet Regional Health Europe.

@Alice

I'm 55+, and I rarely encounter commercials.

I do know that I need a doctor to prescribe the #HPV vax for people my age. Which is annoying af, because anyone can contract HPV, and I only recently heard that men are advised to get if if they are sexually active (I'm not, currently, though I anticipate sexing with someone in the future).

Meanwhile, my #pharmacy is pestering me to get the #RSV vax. Which, I'm not certain I'm particularly at risk of either catching it or transmitting it. The #university I applied to doesn't have a checkbox on the application for "not in the demographic that is required to get a #meningitis vax."

I'm on #marketplace insurance. I don't object to #vaccinations , but any that require me to pay for them may be delayed.

Pretty exciting to see oral amphotericin behaving comparably to IV amphotericin for #HIV associated #Cryptococcus #meningitis

Phase 2 open label #RCT, so not quite there yet, but big potential win in simplicity and access to treatment for
#Cryptococcusneoformans & other #fungal diseases, potentially even #mucor

#Florida city under #quarantine after deadly #GiantAfricanLandSnail detected

Story by Katherine Donlevy, June 20, 2023

"State officials placed part of a Florida city under quarantine Tuesday as they race to eradicate the invasive, parasite-carrying invasive giant African snail.

"The 3.5-mile section of #Miramar in #BrowardCounty — located just 11 miles west of Hollywood — will be covered in a metaldehyde-based molluscicide to exterminate the insects after a giant African snail was found in the area earlier this month.

"Residents will be able to move out of the treatment area freely but are prevented from moving any plant-based supplies that could harbor the mammoth mollusk’s eggs.

“Under the quarantine, it is unlawful to move a giant African land snail or a regulated article, including, but not limited to, plants, plant parts, plants in soil, soil, yard waste, debris, compost or building materials, within, through or from the defined quarantine area without a compliance agreement,” the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced.

"The agency confirmed that a giant African snail — which can stretch up to 8 inches long — was spotted in the area in June, prompting an increased survey.

"Giant African snails have been contended as 'one of the most damaging snails in the world' for their threat to both agriculture and human life. The invasive Giant African land snail carried the rat lungworm parasite that can induce #meningitis in humans."
