The number of (daytime) butterflies in the Netherlands reached its lowest level on record in 2023. Since 1992, populations were reduced by more than half.

Today I learned that there have never been so few butterflies counted in the Netherlands as this spring. Ever since I was a child I have seen the number decrease and that hurts me. More than 70% loss of biodiversity during my lifetime and I want this to stop. Time for a change of mentality for nature and therefore for our future.

Days 8-9: All four backyard fence chryses, in ascending degrees of morph. I’m a little nervous about the last one. It’s been dark for several days and apparently prolonged blackness could indicate pupal peril. #Butterflies

MORE DAY 7, CON’T: So I ran to the bunkhouse to get a real camera. After futzing with the obtuse manual to get the right settings, failing, resorting to watching a how-to-time-lapse-with-an-R6 video, and finding a better tripod, I dashed back out. It couldn’t have been more than 30 minutes. But I was too late. Behold the newly-minted Chrys IV, fresh and green and gold as anything, the one that got away. Next time I’m just gonna sit and watch. #butterflies
DAY 7: New J-hanger just dropped! (That’s right, I caved and watched a butterfly nerd video and these guys are called “J-hangers”). This brings the total up to 4. I have never known this run of fence to be such a hotbed of monarch pupativity. #Butterflies

A comprehensive study found 22% of #butterflies in #UnitedStates disappeared between 2000 and 2020... The researchers behind the Science study used data from more than 12.6 million butterflies spanning 342 individual species, drawing from 76,000 surveys across 35 nationwide monitoring programs. Funded by the #USGS, the study was the first to integrate such a vast dataset, its authors said.

DAY 5a: the game is afoot! 1)The OG chrysalis has started to show some dark spots. 2) Chrys II, discovered yesterday, is showing even more dark spots. 3) This morning I unexpectedly came across yet another chrysalis (Chrys III) on a different run of fence, and it’s almost completely black. All three are morphin’ right along; they darken before they emerge. Here’s OG:
