MORE DAY 7, CON’T: So I ran to the bunkhouse to get a real camera. After futzing with the obtuse manual to get the right settings, failing, resorting to watching a how-to-time-lapse-with-an-R6 video, and finding a better tripod, I dashed back out. It couldn’t have been more than 30 minutes. But I was too late. Behold the newly-minted Chrys IV, fresh and green and gold as anything, the one that got away. Next time I’m just gonna sit and watch. #butterflies

DAY 7: New J-hanger just dropped! (That’s right, I caved and watched a butterfly nerd video and these guys are called “J-hangers”). This brings the total up to 4. I have never known this run of fence to be such a hotbed of monarch pupativity. #Butterflies

The researchers behind the Science study used data from more than 12.6 million butterflies spanning 342 individual species, drawing from 76,000 surveys across 35 nationwide monitoring programs. DAY 5a: the game is afoot! 1)The OG chrysalis has started to show some dark spots. 2) Chrys II, discovered yesterday, is showing even more dark spots. 3) This morning I unexpectedly came across yet another chrysalis (Chrys III) on a different run of fence, and it’s almost completely black. All three are morphin’ right along; they darken before they emerge. Here’s OG:
