Mild night, heavy showers. Still lots of Common Quakers and Hebrew Characters about. First sightings in 2025 of:

1) & 2) Muslin Moth (male)
3) Double-striped pug

Also had a Brindled Pug but managed one blurry photo before he flew off! The unsociable git.

Numbers looking better this year. Mild and dry spring has helped. Still early in the year, but not long until the bright summer moths appear...

Overhead shot of 2cm moth on a finger. It is quite a handsome moth. It is a warm, smooth ash grey, with sparsely scattered black dots. It has a very furry head and two feathered antennae point left and right. The background is blurred green foliage.

Its eye area is black. You can can just make out a yellow, furry abdomen and white, furry legs. Its antennae are thick and feathered.

Overhead shot of a mid-grey pug moth on a wall. It stretches its wings out like a fan or like a dancer holding a burlesque dress with arms outstretched, so it's twice as wide as it is high. It has a thin abdomen and two black pin eyes. It has two distinct black equidistant lines that each start on the top edge of the outstretched wing and curve in a U shape so they cross the abdomen and end up on the top wing edge the other side. Think of two Us of an upturned rainbow.

Sign the petition to save San Bruno Mountain!

A giant Amazon-style warehouse and distribution center has been proposed on the site of Guadalupe Quarry on San Bruno Mountain, which is home to numerous threatened and endangered species, including endangered butterflies whose habitat would be paved over by the development. Green Foothills is partnering with San Bruno Mountain Watch to oppose this destructive project.

The Pale Grass Blue butterfly (Pseudozizeeria maha) has been expanding its range northward in Japan, likely due to climate warming. Near the northern edge of its range, individuals show changes in wing spot patterns—likely a flexible response to colder winter temperatures.

One of the "blues" and I have no idea which species. Pretty sure the only way to identify these things is to dunk in a jar of formaldehyde and send to a museum somewhere in London.

Which I do not want to do. Happy just to take photos thanks.

Anyway, the Nepali name for butterfly is Putali. Do whatever you want with that information.

I love the hairy hues hidden away inside the wings. Classy.

Scientific name for butterflies is "scaly wing". This photo shows you why. Except in America of course where they have been renamed "Flappy Jitters" and made illegal under threat of deportation.

Up close with the wings of an Azure Sapphire, you can see the little scales that make the magic.
