Until shortly ago this spillway entrance was overseen for failure analysis by #FERC experts. The operators do not have this expertise, which was shared by many quite efficiently.

The structure protects a 61m earth fill damn that has zero tolerance for over-topping.

If the dam fails, it will put a community of ~3,OOO under as much of 10m of water.

Losing this capacity is not a savings. There was already efficiency and anyway the prime purpose of government is effective service not efficiency.

As I heard it today during an engineer-led tour in connection with emergency warning systems improvements, we're no longer capable of modeling complex flow effects through the relief systems for the 200' earth fill dam serviced by this "glory hole" spillway-- due to gratuitous destruction at #FERC.

Which comes while dam spillways etc. are being reassessed and revised to account for 50 years of better statistics and projection of #ClimateChange effects.

"Dismissing opposition from renewable energy developers, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Tuesday approved the PJM Interconnection’s proposal for a fast-track interconnection review for shovel-ready generation projects.

#FERC also approved changes to #PJM’s rules for Surplus Interconnection Service, or #SIS, that could help get additional capacity online."

#FERC approved the transaction on the back of a previously granted blanket authorization to BlackRock that allows the asset manager to acquire up to 20% of voting securities of certain types of #UtilityCompanies. BlackRock first received the authorization in 2010, and the Commission declined to reconsider it as part of the transaction.

Federal regulators have rejected a deal that would let Amazon draw more power from a Pennsylvania nuclear plant to supply new bit barns next to the site, on the grounds this would set a precedent which may affect grid reliability and increase energy costs. Federal court hears #pipeline case.

"The case pits a blue state trying to wean itself off natural gas against #FERC, which last year approved a #pipeline to send enough gas for several million homes in the Northeast.

The panel of judges also wrestled with how a ruling for #NewJersey could change the way FERC has to deal with pipeline projects in other states that have ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets."

The FERC data mess is never going to end. 😭

Last week a user found some randomly missing values in the SQLite DB we generate from FERC's XBRL that *do* appear in the PDFs generated by the FERC eLibrary. It looks like this is because utilities are submitting XBRL that doesn't conform to the taxonomy, but FERC still accepts the filings. This affects ~7% of the 2.2 million values reported in the 2021 Form 1.

"Delays were expected to get even longer with #RenewableEnergy projects picking up steam as #wind and #solar energy costs fell below that of coal or gas power plants.

#FERC’s old way of doing things was designed for a #grid dominated by #FossilFuels. In the past, developers might only have focused on several large-scale power plants at a time. Now they might be juggling thousands of smaller solar, wind, and battery projects."

This is about to change.
